Three photojournalists you should know

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. And in journalism, that’s certainly true.

That’s why, in newsrooms around the world, in addition to covering the news, journalists are always looking for the image that will accompany their story. Many times, a good photo can determine whether your story will be on the front page or relegated to the inside pages of the newspaper.

Other times, the photo is so powerful, that it needs nothing more than a caption to shock the world.

A photojournalist is a communication professional who oversees telling reality through his or her lens. Throughout the years, they have been witnesses of history and through their lenses they have allowed the world to know what is happening.

Here is a list of 3 photojournalists you should know. Either to inspire you or to admire their great work.

  1. Sebastião Salgado

He is perhaps one of the most important photojournalists of these times. Is form Brazil. His training was as an economist. His work at the International Coffee Organization in London required him to make frequent trips to Africa, and his desire to document these experiences sparked his interest in photography. He has worked for several agencies.

He has received numerous awards for his work. According to the website, his photographs portray people living in desperate economic circumstances.

2. Manuel Saldarriaga:

He is a Colombian photojournalist with more than 20 years of experience. He has worked for several media outlets in that country. He currently works as a photojournalist for the newspaper El Colombiano. He won four times the King of Spain Award for Best Photography. In his most recent work, he documented the journey of immigrants crossing the Darien Gap.

3. Anastasia Taylor-Lind

Anastasia Taylor-Lind is a British/Swedish photojournalist. She also studies poetry. Her work has earned her a Canon Female Photojournalist Award for her long-form reportage from eastern Ukraine. Anastasia is a National Geographic Society Explorer, a TED Fellow, and a 2016 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
